Why CLAUSTRUM?
This is a latim word that means a covered walkway an
open gallery or open árcade that runs along the walls of buildings and forms a
quadrilateral or courtyard.
The linking of a CLAUSTRUM to a cathedral or church,
usually against a warm south flank, generally indicates that it is (or once was)
part of a monastic foundation, "forming a continuous and solid
architectural barrier... the world of the monks from that of the servants and
workers, whose lives and works took place outside and around the CLAUSTRUM
".
